Seafood on the Mississippi Gulf Coast means charbroiled oysters, gumbo, fried shrimp, and, if the timing is right, a boiled seafood feast. Here is where we would eat it, starting in Biloxi and working outward. If we had to pick a single dish, it would be the charbroiled oysters at Half Shell Oyster House.

In Biloxi

Half Shell Oyster House serves those oysters in a two-story French Quarter-style building downtown, and Mississippi Magazine has voted its menu the state's best seafood. Mary Mahoney's is the historic pick, with gumbo and crab dishes served since 1964. The Reef trades polish for a Gulf-facing boardwalk deck and a Sky Bar upstairs, and The Blind Tiger is the open-air seafood shack for po'boys and raw oysters.

In Gulfport

White Cap has been a Gulfport institution since 1929, and the jumbo fried shrimp and gumbo are the reasons to go. The original Half Shell Oyster House sits in the restored Kremer building downtown, Claw Daddy's runs a two-story boiled-seafood hall on Bayou Bernard, and Lil' Ray's is the counter-service po'boy shop with French bread trucked in from New Orleans. Shaggy's Gulfport Beach is the beach-bar version, with a gator po'boy.

In Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs

Cuz's Old Town Oyster Bar & Grill does chargrilled oysters under the oaks, Thorny Oyster adds a raw bar and seafood towers, and 200 North Beach serves oysters with bay views from a 1903 newspaper building. Trapani's Eatery is known for paneed trout, and over in Ocean Springs Bacchus On The Bayou has a marina-front patio with Cajun-leaning Gulf seafood.
