The Shed BBQ
Ocean Springs, MS
A funky roadside BBQ joint in Ocean Springs, built from junkyard finds, serving fall-off-the-bone ribs alongside live blues most nights of the week.
Atmosphere
The Shed started as an actual shed, and founder Brad Orrison never really stopped building onto it — the place grew room by room out of scrap wood, old signs, and whatever else he'd hauled home from junkyards along the coast. String lights crisscross overhead, the walls are a scavenged jumble of tin and license plates, and picnic-table seating spills from the low-slung dining room onto a covered patio and yard. There's no air conditioning, so summer nights get warm fast, especially once a band sets up and the crowd packs in shoulder to shoulder. It reads less like a restaurant than somebody's backyard party that got out of hand in the best way.
What to Order
Ribs are the thing to get — racks smoked until the meat pulls clean off the bone under a sticky glaze, and regulars order them early before the kitchen runs low. The pulled pork sandwich comes stacked high and needs a fork or a stack of napkins, and the smoked sausage carries enough black pepper bite to hold its own against the sweeter cuts. Can't decide? The Jumbo Sampler Platter covers ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and sausage on one tray, built for two people to split. Order the mac and cheese or the pulled pork nachos on the side, and don't skip the sauce bar — The Shed hands you the bottles and lets you doctor your own plate.
Good to Know
The Shed is open 10am to 9pm every day of the week, and it runs on a strict walk-in basis — there's no host stand and no reservations, you just find an open table and sit down. That works fine on a quiet Tuesday and less fine on a summer Saturday night, when the wait can run past an hour once the band starts and the lot fills in. High chairs are available and the picnic-table setup is casual enough for kids to make a mess without anyone blinking. Live music runs most nights of the week, so call ahead to (228) 875-9590 if you want to know who's on stage before you drive out.
Our Take
The Shed earns its reputation as much for the scene as the sauce — a barbecue joint that's been featured on national TV and is still packing picnic tables with a live band most nights. The ribs and pulled pork are genuinely good, if not the most technically polished smoke on the Coast, and the whole point here is the mess, the music, and the junkyard décor rather than a quiet dinner. Go hungry, go early if you hate waiting, and leave the white tablecloth expectations at home.
