Atmosphere
The Rack House takes its name from the warehouses where whiskey ages, and the room plays along without going theme-park about it. The restaurant fills a tall, arched corner building in historic downtown Gulfport, with a formal ground-floor dining room and a mezzanine lounge upstairs where the bourbon collection lives. The bottle count runs past 100 bourbons, ryes, whiskeys and scotches, and the bar is happy to walk a beginner through an Old Fashioned. The mood is dressy casual. Couples in dressed-up dinner mode sit near tables of coworkers in work clothes, and nobody seems out of place.
What to Order
Start with the jumbo lump crab cake or the lamb lollipops, then pick your steak. The menu runs from a USDA Choice sirloin up through a filet, a strip, a 13-ounce Delmonico ribeye and an Australian Wagyu ribeye. At last check the filet was $36 and the Delmonico $42, so a good steak does not require a splurge. The cabernet braised short rib is the best answer if someone at the table does not want a steak. Sides are ordered separately, and the bacon mac and cheese and creamed spinach are the safe bets. If it is Saturday or Sunday, brunch brings short rib over smoked Gouda grits and a crab cake Benedict.
Good to Know
The Rack House takes dine-in reservations, and it also runs a waitlist through Yelp, which helps on a packed Friday or Saturday. Weeknight service runs until about 10 p.m., a little later on weekends, and lunch is served most days. Brunch is Saturday and Sunday and wraps up at 3 p.m. The restaurant's own pages disagree on whether brunch starts at 10 or 11, so call or check current hours before planning around it. The Rack House Bourbon Society meets monthly for tastings, and the restaurant says it is the first bourbon club on the Gulf Coast. The restaurant lists Best Steaks on the Coast from the Covey Awards for 2023 and 2024.
Our Take
This is the steakhouse to book when you want a good steak without a casino floor between you and dinner. The prices are fair for the cut, the service is friendly without being fussy, and the upstairs lounge is worth a drink even if you already ate elsewhere. Reserve a table for Friday or Saturday night, ask about the current bourbon flight, and save room for the short rib if you are also coming back for brunch.
