Atmosphere
The Chimneys looks like a house because it was built to look like the one that stood here before Katrina. A Queen Anne beachfront home from the early 1900s, once owned by a lumberman named T.G.B. Kellier, served as the restaurant for years until the 2005 hurricane destroyed it. The owners saved the bricks, and the current building, which opened in January 2010, uses them in its double fireplaces. The heart pine floors came from an 1820s house in Vaiden. Inside you get exposed brick, white tablecloths and fresh flowers, plus a covered front porch facing the beach and the oaks. It feels closer to a dinner party at someone's grandmother's than a restaurant.
What to Order
Seafood leads the dinner menu. The crab cakes are made with lump crabmeat and served with remoulade, and the seafood gumbo comes in cup or bowl. For an entree, look at the trout dishes, the stuffed flounder or the fried oysters. Steaks are not an afterthought here, with a ribeye and an eight-ounce filet in Marchand de Vin, but the seafood is why most locals come. Sunday brunch is the other draw. Shrimp and grits arrive over goat cheese and cheddar grits with bacon and green onions, and the crab cakes come topped with fried eggs and hollandaise. Trout and eggs Sardou, eggs Benedict and bottomless mimosas round out the brunch list.
Good to Know
Reservations are recommended, especially for Sunday brunch, and the restaurant takes them by phone and through Tock. Hours have run Tuesday through Friday for lunch and dinner, Saturday for dinner only, and Sunday for brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Monday closed. Listings disagree by a half hour on weekday lunch openings, so confirm current hours before you drive over. Prices are moderate to upper-moderate, with dinner entrees mostly in the $20s and $30s at last check. Arrive a few minutes early to look at the fireplaces and the porch before you sit down.
Our Take
The Chimneys is the Gulfport table for a birthday, an anniversary or a Sunday when the family is in town. The building has a real story, the seafood is handled with care and the brunch has earned its loyal following. It is not the place for a casual beach-clothes lunch. Book a Sunday table a few days ahead, ask for the porch if the weather is good, and order the crab cakes whichever meal you choose.
